it's such a shame i didn't like this as much as i wanted to because charlie kaufman is such a phenomenal screenwriter, and while this is one of his weaker scripts it's still fantastic. it's so interesting to see a film where a kid thinks like a human with fears of death and existentialism, says "thank god", and mentions cancer. but the story is far weaker than its script, far too convoluted yet incredibly simple. it becomes less of a story about a kid grappling with his fears as it goes on, which is such a shame because that as a concept is something we don't see in many animated films. i hate the night entities as a concept despite their fantastic designs and voice actors, because they feel like the emotions from inside out but useless and without any substance, and the whole frame story messes with the flow of the film and makes it far less nuanced or believable than it was before.
