What does it mean to create a mechanism of mass destruction?
This is just one of the many questions Robert J. Oppenheimer is faced with as he is recruited to build a bomb, the type the world has never seen before. Of course, he's urged to do it to beat the germans who are building there own and the frightening political landscape that is brewing.
Cillian Murphy has already worked with Nolan plenty of times, but here is his best performance. It's as if the Oscar for Best Actor already has his name on it. Murphy gives the performance of his career, fully embodying Robert's every whim and worry. You feel his anxiety and worry via Murphy's acting, Nolan's impactful editing and the illustrious score by Ludwig Gunnarson that gives the film a palpable, ticking heartbeat.
Furthermore, it's the rest of the ensemble cast that makes Oppenheimer tick. Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Florence Pugh all give outstanding performances.
With Oppenheimer, Nolan has created an intense character study that serves as one of his best pieces of work. Taut, palpable and dense, Oppenheimer is a frightening exploration of the destruction man can sow
