"Whyyyyyy'd you have to spillllllll youuuuuur beaaaaannnnnns?"
THE LIGHTHOUSE is kinda like if the Coen Brothers marathoned Bergman’s filmography for a month without sleep and then feverishly adapted H.P Lovecraft. I expected it to be a slow descent into madness, but was surprised to find the script go “Naw, everyone’s already fucking nuts from the get-go!” It’s filled with nightmarish imagery, laced with acidic darkness, and in the most surprising twist of all, is a full-blown laugh out loud comedy. It’s got all the ‘One Perfect Shots’ you’d expect to get from the director of THE VVIWTCH, but it also takes the piss out of its own premise at every turn, and gives ample opportunity for a grizzled William Dafoe to bug his eyes out and fart up a storm. I’m not quite sure what accent Robert Pattinson is struggling through, but his manic performance is one for the books. He has about a dozen versions of Keanu Reeves “I WANT FUCKING ROOM SERVICE!” monologue from JOHNNY MNEMONIC, but this time around, the film knows it's funny. Every time you think the story has reached a climax, it pushes things just a little bit further, until the audience is screaming and whispering “Please! Enough!” in the best of ways.
