After watching this and Barbie I would like to inform you that I’m in my Ryan Gosling era.
Man this movie is so wonderfully made. The use of color was the thing that really impressed me and the camera work made the movie flow so nicely. The music and dance choreography were lively and the way the story was told through them was brilliant. I genuinely felt like I cared about the characters and chemistry between them was perfect. Great performances all around.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the end of their story specifically but I love when a movie can invoke bittersweetness and this one really makes you ache. How the movie took place in both the 50s and the 2010s simultaneously was both really cool and distracting for me. But the romanticizing of Hollywood and LA when we all know what really happens there made me roll my eyes a bit.
While I’m not the biggest fan of musicals, this one had great balance and was never overdone like I feel like they tend to be. Solid cinema for sure.
