Let me start off by saying that this movie is really fun. Hellboy is a really unique hero and Ron Pearlman gives us a hardened protagonist with a surprising emotional depth and likeability . The makeup is very impressive and for being made in 2004, the effects are decent. The set design and practical effects exude the fantastical Guillermo Del Toro magic that I love.
The villains were not so great and the monster got old pretty quickly. Some the dialog was clunky and at times the acting wasn’t convincing. I feel like after a strong first half, the movie falters significantly and the climax of the movie just didn’t hit. The romance had heart but felt somewhat awkward. This movie had everything in place to be downright amazing but it just didn’t execute.
