this is the first movie in a while (perhaps since stoker) that I've come out of the cinema wanting to write an essay about it - I can't talk about everything I love about this without heading into spoiler territory, so please stop reading if you haven't watched.
I came out of the movie thinking that this was the female superhero film I've always wanted - while it reminded me, unexpectedly, of room at key moments, it might possibly have given me more in terms of its unwavering focus on its heroine's resourcefulness, agency and will to survive. I loved that the aliens weren't the main villains; I loved the quiet buildup of intensity tempered with humour; I loved the pacing and that FANTASTIC last scene payoff. mary elizabeth winstead was stellar; again, I found myself thinking throughout that I've never watched a film which gave its female protagonist so much screen time without reducing her to a damsel in distress or resorting to a romantic sideplot. and, oh man, that opening sequence is my favourite in the genre since scream. final thought: the movie uses its one allotted 'fuck' SO well, it drew an appreciative murmur from the audience 👍👍
