I think I may have hyped this up a bit too much for myself. Needless to say its a very good film, but it didn't quite blow me away like it seems to have a lot of others. The leads are fantastic, commanding the screen, I was unable to take my eyes off them, with DaFoe in particular being a domineering presence.
I got real 90s late night movie on BBC 2/Channel 4 vibes with this. Watching these forbidden films when I should've been asleep hours ago. Enticed by the lure of nudity, gore, sex and violence, yet only catching a brief glimpse yet still captivated by the film regardless.
Its a very good follow up for the director of one of my favourite horrors, The Witch, although this one doesn't have quite as much of an impact.
