A who’s who of 2017 actors who would go on to become bigger names (Mia Goth, Anya Taylor-Joy, George MacKay, Charlie Heaton, and that Imperial twit from Andor) star in this interesting mystery/ghost story. A group of siblings and their mom come to America, fleeing a darkness in their past. But mom dies soon after arrival, so they make a pact to stay hidden away on the estate until the oldest, Jack (MacKay), turns 21 and can be their legal guardian. However, it seems they have not outrun what they were fleeing after all.
I expected a horror movie since it was billed as such and was confused by the tonal changes early on, including believing it to be taking place in one time period and being shocked when Jack goes to the town store revealing its in another time altogether. After that I realised Marrowbone is playing its cards very close to the vest, and sat back and enjoyed the slow burn and reveals along the way. Everything does come together, though people seem split on the ending. For the record I liked it - it was one of several possibilities I guessed along the way, which is what I liked most, how it kept me guessing what was going on. It is a horror movie after all, but the horror is more real than supernatural, and scarier in some respects that way. Not so keen on the denouement, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
Well worth a watch if you like the actors -Heaton even gets to do some things, unlike the later seasons of Stranger Things, and Goth and Taylor-Joy are always good.
