“Do you want to make money or do politics?” The loneliness of the spy who realizes he’s just a little pawn in the vastness of other people’s games. The farther Park gets into the upper echelons of Pyongyang (indeed, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Kim Jung-il actually portrayed on screen before), the more he realizes how complicated and colluded relations between the North and South actually are. A film of such effortless verve in bringing to life the actual day-in-day-out patience of the spy’s long game, building to a cruel lesson in all the ugly ways the right manipulates reality to hold on to power (no matter the name under which they purport to serve the people). “South Korea is such an interesting country!”
