Bruno Ganz as an ordinary everyman living his own little life of quiet desperation, only to find with a shock to the head just how quickly and completely the state can destroy a person’s life. “Come on, open both eyes. What do you see?” Awakening from his coma to find he’s been turned into either a people’s hero in the underground or the face of the police’s violent campaign against terror, the difference only depending on who’s shaping the news for whom; a tool, a patsy, a symbol, a cover-up, anything but just a man who missed his wife. “I’d like to say that I don’t have anything to say to you or me. Ask your TV set.” Ganz, of course, plays his mounting fury and frustration with so much terrifyingly caged despair; doing all the difficult work of getting his brain back, only to find out that there’s no such hope for getting his actual life back. “You’re crazy!” “Maybe, maybe not.”
