A film aching with that peculiar sadness that overcomes one (just me?) when visiting estate sales or antique shops. A whole life’s collection of mattering reduced to so much interchangeable stuff; surely it all still means something, only if I can make the leap of deciding that some special thing might just be able to become my stuff when I'm gone. “It all looks like a big shipwreck!” Ogier’s expat coming home to make sense of her old friend’s death, finding instead only the sad business of bidding on her valuables by the basketful; when even a photo album of actual moments in time gets casually thrown up for sale. Bellon shoots Paris itself like a giant renovation project, so many lives lived being chucked out to make way for the other lives waiting for their own more immediately meaningful structures and containers (ruthlessly materialist cinema). A young couple bidding on an antique mirror to build their own life together, a group of young cinephiles poring over old equipment and magazines; the promise of keeping the past alive only in those willing to even look at the past in the first place, and maybe see something of themselves when they do. “Who can say what really makes history?”
