“Do you want to tell us a ghost story?” Soi Cheang borrows from the Blair Witch template for a frequently disquieting portrait of collective guilt and retribution; the present’s collection of ghost story enthusiasts and paranormal investigators running into an urban legend from a past that’s far from over. A baby who remains mostly only seen via his grotesque effects on people who see him (“His head was as big as a rubbish bin!”); an innocent creature abandoned, only to be abandoned over and over again by people who only know how to see him as a monster. Josie Ho’s intrepid reporter wants to get to something like the baby’s actual truth beneath the larger-than-life stories told about him; a scream and a cut to black turning out to be the closest thing to truth she’ll get.
