On the way sunlight perfectly falls on depressed rich people away on holiday pondering their own mortality; it’s all very painterly and gracefully autumnal and sort of mildly offensive in its tired uselessness. Huppert’s dying matriarch gathers a group of disparate friends and family on the Portuguese coast like she’s casting some especially tedious ensemble piece about various Transatlantic upper-middle-class malaises. Everyone gets their own private little drama as the long, leisurely day unfurls, none of it achieving much in the way of insight or surprise (“When we got married, I believed in those vows!”). And maybe the film’s biggest crime is that Sachs hasn’t even made Frankie a terribly interesting character, dying of cancer standing in for anything much in the way of personality; Huppert’s mostly left just looking vaguely bemused by it all.
