“Just as the natural world can invoke photogenic beauty in the right places, the same staying power is fully assured in Sanders’ directorial prowess, inspired by what we see and perceive, often by looking at the same thing from two lenses as living creatures, though not just as humans, critters, or robots who discover complex feelings. The latter might seem the most alien, but then the most alike to us, especially when we ignore ethics, defy our programming, and trust an instinctual urge. The Wild Robot recognizes beauty, expends bravery, and embraces untapped intuition as something brilliant for animation, and crucial for its future as a cinematic discipline. Put simply, it is a wrenching, stirring, teary-eyed treat, the best animated film this year, and my personal favorite of the year overall.”
