Strikes me as one of the very few truly culturally microcosmic movies ever made, this one is very much about haunting (&being haunted by) your ancestry, and what it means to be freed from a family tree at the hands of the physical - the physical itself belongs to your ancestry though, as the place that birthed you.... very very much a film of deep healing, though Miyazaki's consistent focus on creating events out of non-events often roots the film in foundations of mundanity - that, and the most interesting visual conceit here is a pretty basic architectural scheme.
