True story.
Transformers One is even better the second time. Somehow, it hit harder this time, and that third act was even more chilling. My initial criticism of Megatron’s turn being slightly rushed went away after realizing all that subtle foreshadowing from his lighthearted dialogue implying murder right from the start all along. His character work is, by far, the best one among all the characters in this film, but you already knew that. Much props to Brian Tyree Henry’s voice acting as well; the way he highlights the tragedy of his character’s downfall is beyond amazing. Laurence Fishburne, as I’ve said before, is amazing as well, and Keegan-Michael Key has grown on me now. The tonal shift by the second half may or may not work for everybody but I dug it a lot, so much that I’d love to see the second film (if we get one at all, which I hope we do, especially looking how there were now twice as many people in my theater compared to my first viewing last week) follow suit with a darker tone. The film is still not all perfect, but man, it still already is a good film in its own right thanks to Josh Cooley’s direction. I can forgive him now for Toy Story 4.
P.S. My local theater had a giveaway for the Optimus Prime and Megatron Battle Charger toy pack but needed 5 tickets first to get one, in which we had less than 5 tickets. This movie really had me wanting to collect some Transformers toys again.
