LOTS of thoughts on this movie, trying to keep them organized: - The first half is kinda rough, focusing on a lot of cliched child-against-parent dynamics where the child doesn't believe in parent's fantasy stories because she hasn't seen them herself, which kind of undercuts the mythos of the first film. - I wanted more Monica Bellucci; she should've been the main villain. - Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder, and ESPECIALLY Michael Keaton are gems for coming back to these roles after almost 40 years. Meanwhile, it was hilarious seeing the extents the filmmakers were going to avoid having Jeffrey Jones's face onscreen. - It was sad though that the Maitlands couldn't be brought back, because you know, almost four decades gone, and Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin won't look like the same ghosts they're supposed to be. So they had to be cast aside with throwaway lines *sighs*. - I'm starting to notice more and more now how some filmmakers excel with lower budgets. This movie (at least, the first half) looks too polished and glossy to be a Tim Burton film, which surprises me because it IS Burton, but it doesn't have the same look as a film supposed to be set in the same charming world as the first Beetlejuice film. - The second half picks up SIGNIFICANTLY with more supernatural elements, and a couple of plot twists along the way where Burton can now bring his macabre magic and dark humor back. - The third act was AWESOME!! Doesn't reach the heights of the first one though. But, I'm feeling sentimental for watching my first Burton movie in the cinema, so, half star bump.
