Tom: Boredom makes men villains.
Toxic maarrrrrsculinity. Rewatching this was a treat. Dafoe and Pattinson chew the set, and the set is oh so very chewable, a scurvy-stricken phantasmagoria of brine and brittle wood and imposing brickwork. And not only does the film look phenomenal, the sound is STUNNING! Honestly the sound design and score are just singularly brilliant - the echoes and wails of twenty thousand leagues ring around the thing like ghosts risen from the deep. At the film’s most evocative moments, the entire audio mix seems to dissolve into the claustrophobic environment, suggesting the crew themselves are damned seadogs lost to the sirens’ intoxicating call.
The best expressionist film since Caligari.
