The first half hour is filled with a sphincter-tightening creep of the unknown, made even more anxiety-inducing by the tease of just what “Longlegs” might be in the opening minutes, as well as a Silence of the Lambs-esque lone officer searching an eerie house sequence. The pace slows a little after that first act, but is carried by a supernatural mystery behind these serial killings and their link, and remains haunting through its music cues and and Maika Monroe’s best Clarice impression, which certainly passes muster. Loved seeing this in theater on an opening weekend with a packed house — the best, and probably only, way to feel this film’s desired effect. Although a little paint-by-numbers from what we’ve seen before, it’s what I’m looking for in a horror movie, and hope it leads to more like it.
