Aeschylus codified the Greek tragedy. Aristophanes laid the framework of ancient comedy. And George Fucking Miller handed down the standards of excellence for post-apocalyptic action films. Yes, that is how authoritative and unimpeachable I believe Mad Max: Fury Road is. No prior knowledge of the series is necessary, very little exposition is needed, everything we need to know about the characters is spelled out in visual language, and only one plot twist complicates the narrative. This is a simple, straightforward chase made all the more exhilarating by its largely authentic rigs and explosions. For its genre, Fury Road is perfect. Even beyond its genre, it should have handily beaten Spotlight for 2015's Best Picture.
