I’ve seen some people call ‘Before I Go to Sleep’ a “poor man’s Memento,” which I couldn’t help but laugh at, but honestly, I’m not entirely on that bandwagon. I know I might be in the minority here, but I really enjoyed this film. It follows the story of a woman who wakes up every day unable to remember her life, the result of a traumatic accident in her past. As she starts piecing things together, terrifying truths emerge, forcing her to question everyone around her.
Sure, there are a few plot holes; like the whole sleeping angle, where Kidman would forget everything. Could she not just stay up all night and skip the reset entirely? But despite that, the story absolutely gripped me. The twist at the end, and how everything finally clicks into place, was so well done. It’s a film that I feel deserves way more credit than it gets, and I’ll definitely be revisiting it down the line.
Firth, Kidman, and Mark Strong were all brilliant in their roles. I’ve seen some criticism aimed at Kidman, but I don’t get it! People really need to ease up. Firth, in particular, was impressive, showing a range I haven’t seen much from him before (and without giving anything away, it’s such a shift from what I expected of him). If you’re into films like Nolan’s ‘Memento,’ I’d say give this one a shot. It keeps you guessing the entire time, and it really doesn’t let up. Definitely recommended! 4/5.
