Rewatch: possibly the strongest anti-capitalism statement that Scorcese has ever made: an addictive, mesmerizing, completely batshit coup de cinema that revels in Jordan Belfort's appalling antics and makes the audience complicit. It is extreme, over-indulgent, grotesque- which is exactly the point. It avoids the obvious "rise and fall" narrative and instead aims for something more complex: that humans are at heart selfish and greedy but constrained only by a fear of the consequences- so when we see someone like Belfort, who solidly and completely does not give a fuck, in our heart of hearts we admire them, we wish we could be them, even as we recoil from their behavior. After all, people like Jordan Belfort do not exist in a vacuum: they can only do what they do because everyone wants a little bit more than what they have. In this way, Wolf of Wolf Street pulls off the difficult balancing act of making us both loathe and admire its anti-hero in equal measure. So it is that despite everything, by the film's end Jordan is still peddling his cod-messianic bullshit, crowds are still hanging on his every word, and the actual good guys are still getting sweaty bollocks riding on the subway.
