Wow. Both poorly made-- bad script, bad story, bad CGI-- AND boring as shit. I have a soft spot for the original ANT MAN, but this wastes pretty much everything that made the original film so enjoyable: the fizzing, frenetic energy, the small stakes, the easy-going, comedic charm of Paul Rudd. This abomination ends up a bloated, green-screened, incoherent mess that exists seemingly for the sole purpose of setting up Kang as the MCU's next big bad: who, of course, in light of subsequent real-life events, Jonathan Majors (who is charismatic for sure but come on guys, let's not pretend like he's isn't doing some very irritating self-serious hamming up here) will no longer be playing. Oh and the stupid Bill Murray cameo was genuinely cringeworthy as well, his smug face practically screaming "look at me everyone I'm Bill Murray and I'm in one of these dumb MCU films everyone please laugh ironically". I did however very much enjoy the Reuben cameo: he really does have the funniest line in the whole movie. But overall this is a film which feels so lifeless, so soulless, so joyless that it actually quite insulting. You've got Paul Rudd in this movie and you just have him running around the whole time yelling for his daughter! The way MODOK is portrayed perhaps highlights the problems best of all: I get it that he's a funny looking dude, but then for some reason the filmmakers decide to give him a redemption character arc, and then for some other reason they decide to shit all over that redemption arc by turning his final scene into a little snarkfest where MODOK becomes the butt of the joke again. Like, what is it you're going for here film, emotional redemption arc or haha what a stupid dumb asshole doesn't he look like an asshole-- you can have one, you can have the latter followed by the former, but what you can't do is try and mix them both together. Oh, and as far as I can see (not that it matters now) but Kang is given NO motive for his actions whatsoever. Sigh.
