a solid debut from Anna Kendrick that firmly replicates the instinctual fear women often experience through increasingly uncomfortable interactions with men.
the structure of this film is quite ambitious for a first feature and ends up being the most compelling aspect. the interpolation of timelines elevates moments of tension, while subverting climactic moments. Kendrick finds a unique way to tell a familiar true crime story, while balancing comedic tones with some very disturbing ones.
unfortunately, this movie still isn’t able to avoid feeling very familiar. it does, however, make me excited to see whatever she directs next.
