i have no idea what to make of this film. left me utterly perplexed.
there’s this glossy ambition that drapes itself over every aspect of this production, seemingly enhancing many of its fragmented pieces. this veil makes reductive representation and messaging seem empowering. it makes good performances seem celestial. it transforms embarrassing contradictions into meaningful connections. if this film weren’t taken so seriously, it would be a genuine satire. if it wasn’t so ambitious, it would be shockingly mundane.
i really struggle to see what many other people are seeing within this film. while Selena Gomez might very well be “mother” and Zoe Saldaña probably “slayed”, that’s just not what i’m here for. i will admit that the spectacle is certainly grand. however, the substance is, at best, serviceable and, at worst, insulting.
