a mess of a movie. the character introduced and marketed as the male lead ends up being a foil that serves no purpose at all except as a parody for “real men” to feel superior to. the female lead, as good as mikey madison’s acting is, gets virtually nothing to work with which reduces her character to a whining, swearing brat. luckily a real man ends up swooping in - the strong, sensitive type who clearly respects women - he has a grandmother, after all! - to help stupid, stupid anora do what she herself is obviously incapable of: coming to terms with her sad, pathetic reality. thank you so much, sean baker. this is what women needed.
