J. Matthew Lucas’s review published on Letterboxd:
As great as I’ve heard, and obviously this movie and Karyn Kusama deserved better. But it almost seems destined to be a cult classic in the moment from its adherent to genre while not being a straight horror movie, to its soundtrack which holds up beautifully, to its obvious bisexual energy that is just chef’s kiss.
It feels weird to say considering this is only 12 years old, but it’s definitely ahead of its time with that bisexual energy, genre blending and feminist themes that “Promising Young Women” definitely capitalized off of recently and garnered critical acclaim, even using Adam Brody’s powers to play a supreme douchebag. This is of course better than Young Woman because Kusama is a far better director and knows how to make a satisfying movie. At the end I was so wanting some comeuppance for the evil emo band, and it is given. It’s able to be more realistic in Seyfried being held accountable for murdering her best friend, but also give her demon/X-Men powers.
By the way, JK Simmons with a Minnesota accent AND a wig! Truly what did we do to be worthy of such knowing and fun comedic gold.
