Quiz Lady is a Hulu comedy about an introverted woman who goes viral when someone secretly records her answering all the questions of a long-running Jeopardy-like quiz show. Can she get it together long enough to compete on her favorite show?
I like Awkwafina even as an obnoxious seabird so it wasn't too much of a surprise she could pull off an awkward woman in a comedy. She's dialed it back quite a bit while still maintaining her charisma (and some physical comedy too). It was Sandra Oh as her outgoing sister with arrested development that really surprised me. They are both funny, but Oh brings such different energy from what I've seen her do before.
The film is genuinely pretty funny. I wish it was funnier but I think the two ladies - with the help of Jason Schwartzman and Will Ferrell - gang up to deliver a pretty solid, good natured little comedy. The plot also circles around a mighty pug who... well... I guess is very good at being an adorable lump.
<RANDOM ASIDE>That is, if you can find it on Hulu. Found it the first time I was looking for what was new this week but when I circled back to hit play, it was gone. Figured maybe I got my streaming services mixed up so browsed Netflix, Amazon, Max, and Paramount+ with no luck. Circled back and there it was. And while I'm at it, why is there a 50/50 chance the Hulu interface will give me a "continue watching" row at all, much less one that that contains a movie I stopped? Is it just me?</RANDOM ASIDE>
I'm not sure if I'll remember much about it in a year, but it's worth watching and getting a decent chuckle out of today. Awkwafina and Sandra Oh should team up more often... maybe in a reverse scenario where they discover Oh kills it in a game of Wheel of Fortune.
