Not a single scene set in Hawaii… How the fuck can Beetlejuice go Hawaiian if you never give him the chance Tim?
This movie was not as good as I was hoping and not as bad as I was assuming it would be, the first 20 or so minutes drag a whole bunch. But after that it kicks into gear and becomes a lot of fun, I don’t think Michael Keaton missed a step, he effortlessly steps back into the role and kills it. The stuff with Jenna Ortega is great too, I really think she puts her all into this damn movie. Willem DaFoe is having a blast and I loved his character, the movie just feels really busy, Monica Belluci feels wasted. It almost feels like they combined every script from the last 30 years into one, besides the Hawaiian part which I’ll never forgive them for. The last time I watched the original I didn’t love it as much as I used to, which kind of made me sad. But I think it helped me like this film, because I didn’t have impossibly high standards going in. It doesn’t fall for too many trappings legacy sequels besides lack of authentic character growth for Lydia but Winona is good here. Surprising amount of Jeffrey Jones character is used, obviously not the actor himself because that is no bueno.
It’s nice to see Tim Burton enjoying himself making a movie again, it’s been a long time. Also some really stunning shots and production design at time. Shame about the censored fuck though. Oh well better luck next time.
It would be really funny if they went the Alien 3 route and just called the next Beetlejuice 3 instead of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. But they’re not gonna do that, and I don’t blame em.
