It’s really difficult for me to put into words what Lost means to me and the impact it has had on my life. When I found out that a team was working on creating this documentary, I was absolutely through the roof. There is so much to be told here - the creation of the pilot ALONE could be an entire documentary in and of itself. So could the finale. So could The Constant. And on, and on, and on….
I love that this brought together not only perspectives of the actors and show runners, but of writers, “The Others,” and the incredible fanbase. What this show did for the TV industry is monumental; it cannot be denied. Further to that, the communities people have built around this show are truly beautiful. I was a 12 year old girl theorizing on Lostpedia forums, I remember the genuine excitement sitting with my family each Thursday night for every episode, and immediately logging on AIM afterwards to recap with my best friends. My seventh grade science project was a roller coaster named “The Smoke Monster” and to this day I think it’s one of the coolest things my friends and I have ever done.
All of this is to say that Lost is not without its faults, and this doc highlights these - Damon owns up to the toxic writers room situation and how shows need to learn from situations like these and be better so it doesn’t happen again. They acknowledge that there were some misses and not everything episode was the best thing ever, and not all mysteries were answered. I appreciated this.
I am just very glad that Lost does exist, that it changed so many lives, and that so many people were objectively wrong about the finale. As Bobby Moynihan said, “if you don’t love Lost, get the fuck out of my way”
