Finished reading the book five minutes before getting to the theatre and I think that impacted some of my expectations, for better and for worse. The movie makes quite a few changes from the book; certain elements I was looking forward to seeing in the movie were done away with entirely. Roz’s characterisation differs slightly in my opinion and the endings are only vaguely similar. Fink has a much bigger role in the movie, which I love and think was the right choice. There are more changes—some little and others I feel are much bigger—that I’m sad weren’t included, and there are some changes I welcomed. While I was initially disappointed with these changes, I imagine I’ll warm to them when I rewatch.
However, just like the book, Wild Robot is beautiful and full of heart. The animation is lush and the voice acting expressive. Kris Bowers’s score is sweeping and evocative. Another beautiful Dreamworks movie and one that’s sure to be an instant classic.
