The movie that changed not just the superhero genre, but animation as a medium and movies as a whole for good! Something that really struck me on this rewatch is just how detailed every single frame is. The colors pop, the character designs are unique, and the action is breathtakingly staged, but the small details—halftone dots, hash-mark shading, the illusion of mis-printed colors, kinetic action lines, and varying frame rates—had me absolutely mesmerized. My eyes were constantly darting around the screen, absolutely drowning in outstanding visuals. If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had stopped at just having a unique design, it would’ve been a remarkable innovation; but the story is such a marvel that it elevates the film directly into the pantheon of greatest superhero origin stories of all time. Playing on our established knowledge of Spider-Man lore, Miles Morales’ beginnings smartly question the concept of Spider-Man itself and champion the power we all have inside ourselves to be heroes. The film is magnificently chaotic, gleefully meta, emotionally poignant, and truly cutting edge. I have high expectations for the sequel, but I have no doubt that Across the Spider-Verse will be excellent!
