It’s jarring how good Martin Sheen is in this, which I just watched for the first time. Can’t put it into words: subtlety over dramatics; charisma over melodrama; little moments over scene chewery. Performances like this is what made the 1970’s such a dynamic movie decade. Sheen pushed the meaning of good acting to something that was more naturalistic than ever with Badlands. Terrence Malick sure is good at filmmaking; the last twenty minutes might be the best of all.
