It’s a true testament to Wes Craven’s directing abilities that despite every sequel in the Scream franchise essentially being more of the same, there isn’t a single one that doesn’t feel fresh and exciting. The fact that every film is the series is around 2 hours long yet doesn’t overstay its welcome for a second is also an impressive feat, and quite an unusual one. Not many slasher movies could pull off a 2 hour runtime and still feel like every scene is 100% needed.
I decided to squeeze in the last Craven sequel before I go and see the fifth instalment tomorrow, and I’m glad I did. Continuing the meta theme (“How meta can you get?” “How what?” “I don’t know, I heard them say it!”), Scream 4 riffs wonderfully on the new era of remakes that was happening in the 00s. I kinda knew one of the killers based on a few mentions I saw on Letterboxd ages ago, but as always with the Scream franchise, I was still guessing the whole way through.
Courtney Cox is in full force with her good ol’ botox face already rearing its ugly head (badum-tss), but genuinely - she’s such a great character in these movies and I’m very glad she’s returning in the new one. The appearance of Shaun of the Dead was a very welcome surprise, as was the many other references and movie posters of other iconic horror movies. And god, I just could not place Hayden Panettiere for the whole movie until I finally googled her and realised she’s in the game Until Dawn!
So much fun and easily as good as all the previous sequels (Scream 3 gets a fair share of hate, but I enjoyed it). I can’t wait to watch the new one now.
