Longlegs isn’t the terrifying game changer it’s been hyped up as, but it is an excellently sinister crime thriller with supernatural elements that will stick with me for a long time.
Maika Monroe is outstanding and the film sits squarely on her shoulders, but what stood out most is that in a film full of tightly controlled, understated performances, you have Nicholas Cage going in the total opposite direction. It’s already a creepy performance, but the tonal dissonance of him compared to everyone else makes him so much more unsettling.
While comparisons to Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, and Zodiac are inevitable, having recently played Alan Wake II and getting caught up in its disorienting, cultish, mind-control police procedural vibes, I found that Longlegs shares a lot of similar DNA.
I just wish it was longer. The film had the potential to be a weighty serial killer drama, but every new clue landed right in the lap of the FBI and there was never any hassle or bureaucratic red tape to put up roadblocks. Plus, the explanation at the end was quite formulaic. It felt like the movie gave up and forced me to watch a PowerPoint presentation that nearly explains the mysteries. Now, It’s a great story and it does make for a fantastic film, I just wanted a little more meat on the bone and a little more complication in the plot.
