hard to not contend with the marketing and the 'overhyped' train, but to try and take it on its own terms, it is an excellent piece of atmospherics that is also a typical pastiche of window dressing iconography and cliches (which is not necessarily a bad thing) that has an odd emptiness at its core. i was engrossed throughout, to be sure, but it remained stylistically incoherent as it became more narratively clear. or i just couldn't take some of it seriously, most notably Cage's performance — obviously good/bad are useless qualifiers here, but it certainly seems a bit miscalculated either by him or (more likely) Perkins, who seems to be very good at a few things and overly confident in several others. credit where its due, there's some good spooks, i love a serial killer procedural (even when it's basically again just window dressing), and i had some good laughs too (the asylum guy being like damn checking IDs is a good idea, genuinely got me). also i think Monroe is good & has a great screen presence!
