Violent Night is essentially Die Hard if John McClane was Santa Claus. It’s an insane concept. It should’ve been a lot of fun, and it was at first, but it became over complicated with unnecessary lore when Santa’s backstory was introduced. The lightstone family also took too much screen time away from Santa. The audience is given no reason to care about them and for the most part are really only here for David Harbour as Saint Nicholas. Introducing Santa as a deadbeat drunk however, felt kind of like a gimmick and made it harder to root for him in the beginning. The rated R Home Alone homage was fun to see though.
