A deeply thoughtful and sensitive film that is comfortable enough in it’s own skin to explore—without the need to provide answers—all the relationships between grief, patriotism, resentment, distrust, and pride that permeate our cultural understanding of modern military service and interventionism. It’s nuanced and willing to make a mess of its themes while never losing sight of the humanity at the center of its larger discussions.
I’m pretty surprised how underappeciated this is and that it’s the Linklater film I’ve managed to put off the longest.
