I was grateful for every furious action flight sequence as they made me (almost) forget how cringy the love story is that is narrated here and makes up more than half of the story.
Tom Cruise is a Navy fighter pilot who is super-pushy and cocky of Kelly McGillis (he follows her in the ladies room), though his latent homosexuality and his love for his partner Goose are more than obvious. I'm sure this should be shown by the filmmakers as a friendship among interdependent soldiers. The gay vibes are nevertheless obvious. I wonder if it was as obvious in the 80s as it is today.
All the more annoying is that it is sold to the audience as a heterofilm and that the beautiful blonde woman succumbs to the macho character of the hero.
The awesome 80s soundtrack and the stylish look heave this promotional event for the US military just to mediocrity. What a pity! I wanted to like the movie, but it did not work.
I fear that Maverick's homosexuality will not be openly addressed in the sequel, too. But let's see ...
