"Airplanes are beautiful, cursed dreams, waiting for the sky to swallow them up."
Hayao Miyazaki couldn't have made a better, or let's say more fitting, farewell film, as he helps us viewers, us fans, us venerable supporters and lovers of this great master of cinema to get over this farewell. Because (unfortunately) every dream, no matter how beautiful it is, has an end sometime, every love, no matter how great, doesn't last forever, every human being has to leave the world sometime. Time is limited, but everyone can use it as he wants. Whether you design airplanes or make films, to each his own.

Apart from the sensible use of time to pursue one's goals and create good things, and the beauty of being alive, there are always images of war and destruction as a contrast, as if it didn't matter what you do: it seems as if there are always people who would rather fight each other than follow the peaceful way. Why is that so? We don't know, and there is no explanation in the film either.
But our protagonist doesn't let that stop him either and continues to live his dream, makes airplanes, falls in love, gets married and this love story is really something special! Miyazaki simply knows how to stage the small details of intimate togetherness and created here the most romantic Ghibli movie!
In the end, 127 minutes remain pure movie pleasure, which heralds the end of a great era, the end of a great man, the end of a beautiful dream. Even if life goes on, you will be missed, Hayao Miyazaki!
