Watched in the cinema (64th visit in 2023)
In the film "Das Lehrerzimmer", director Ilker Çatak provides an insight into the microcosm of school, which is representative of society and the current culture of debate. In a pointed way and with a fine sense of humor, the film takes up topics that are highly explosive in society. From racism to personal rights and questionable zero-tolerance measures to the question of truth, everything is included.
Dramaturgically cleverly chosen is the role of the teacher, whose behavior, despite idealism, understanding and consideration, is not beyond all doubt. Despite good intentions, Carla Nowak gets caught between the fronts and is confronted with the critical questions of everyone involved.
In the leading role, Leonie Benesch convinces with her intuitive, reserved acting. The camera, which repeatedly brings her into focus alone, offers a glimpse of her facial expressions and makes clear the hopelessness of her situation. Together with the discreetly used disturbing music, this creates a tension that makes the audience sympathize with the main character.
The cast of the school class also leaves nothing to be desired. The youngsters are convincing with their acting performance, both individually and as a group, as well as in relation to the teacher. As a result, you very quickly get the impression of watching a real class that initially cooperates with the teacher, but then turns more and more against her in the course of the film.
This development seems inevitable, as the teacher loses more and more integrity due to the constantly escalating events. Muzzled by the school principal, she can only answer the questions of the parents and the students with empty phrases or leave them uncommented. Carla feels cornered. Panic attacks are the result. Nevertheless, she leaves no stone unturned to win back the trust of her class.
"Das Lehrerzimmer" shows a stalemate that is practically impossible to resolve. Because at the end of the day, everyone has their own opinion, their own version of the truth, and they are convinced they are right. The script, written by Ilker Çatak together with Johannes Duncker, is very well thought out, nuanced and hits the spirit of the times. There is a lot of talk and nothing is said, questions remain unanswered and everyone is angry about the unsatisfactory situation they find themselves in. In the end, it is Carla Nowak who has to pay the price, both physically and psychologically.
