The Lego Batman Movie

The Lego Batman Movie

Watched on 3D Blu-Ray

There are jokes that actually tell themselves. The DC Extended Universe, for example (at least for quite a time). "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Suicide Squad" were perhaps not quite as disastrous as some wanted to make them. But if you wanted to get something out of the narrative muck, you had to face it with a lot of humour. So it's no wonder that there are also cinematically grateful takers who enjoy pulling the whole thing through the mud. In addition to the American cult puppet series "Robot Chicken DC Comics Special 1-3", the makers of the various Lego films have made a name for themselves by using small figures to show off the weaknesses of their great role models. In the home entertainment sector, contributions to DC Comics are already a permanent fixture. As likeable and funny as the superhero parodies were, however, they usually suffered from two points: sparse visuals and too much repetitive humour.

Both weaknesses have been eradicated or at least significantly improved in the first major appearance. Thus, the pictures of "The LEGO Batman Movie" are beyond reproach. A feat: the budget of the feature film was significantly higher than that of the usual direct-to-video productions. And this budget was not only invested in numerous well-known voice actors, but also in an impressive storm of effects that does justice to the big screen. At the same time, however, the team managed to remain true to the toy look, which is cheap in and of itself. This means that large computer explosions exist alongside solid immobile flames, the characters sometimes move as if in a stop-motion film despite the bombastic environment. And the nature of the toys has not been denied either, when new vehicles have to be built quickly in particularly dicey situations or special anatomical devices of the dolls are used.

Apart from these jokes aimed at Lego in general, a large part of the jokes consists of affectionate attacks on the special features of the DC Comics. This time, however, they were allowed to let off steam in a special way. And Seth Grahame-Smith, known as the creator of "Pride and Prejudice & Zombies" or the screenwriter of "Dark Shadows", used this primarily as a continuous reminiscence of past works. There is everything from Tim Burton's "Batman" to "The Dark Knight Rises", even the 60s series is not forgotten in the comic retrospective.

So you should already know the old movies. Unlike the more universal and altogether better "The LEGO Movie" films, the brick version of the Dark Knight loses some of its appeal if you don't understand the various allusions to its own saga and later other films. But even without these, you can have a lot of fun here, especially with younger ones. Something is happening all the time, hardly a scene in which nothing explodes or the protagonists and antagonists throw little vulgarities at each other. And every time you thought you'd seen it all, something new and absurd comes along. Most of it is, of course, quite silly, and not really any more intelligent than what the big live-action film adaptations are doing. But it is entertaining when the film is used to shed light on the rather special relationship between Batman and Joker and to ask the question why the hell we need such ridiculous superheroes. And in many places so beautifully stupid that even as an adult you can watch it without worrying. Because in "The LEGO Batman Movie" everyone gets what was promised beforehand. And the hero we actually deserve for once.
