The courage of director Michel Hazanavicius to make a silent film in this day and age has truly paid off. "The Artist" is simply a nostalgic and unforgettable journey into the past and even though the movie is actually a melodrama, "The Artist" is never melancholic, but rather cheerful and offers a flood of beautiful and funny ideas, which is one of the biggest strengths of "The Artist" for me.
In addition, you miss the sound and the language in the smallest way, because you are simply enthusiastic about the gestures, facial expressions and especially the music. The whole film music by Ludovic Bource is simply terrific and like the whole film a wonderful homage to old Hollywood or in this case to the film composers Bernard Herrmann, Max Steiner and Franz Waxman, for which Bource deservedly received an Oscar.
Also from an acting point of view "The Artist" is very convincing, especially Jean Dujardin in the role of George Valentin and gorgeous Bérénice Bejo as Peppy Miller. Nevertheless, scene stealer is Uggy, the dog.
Therefore, all in all "The Artist" is a beautiful, breathtakingly elegant and extremely charming declaration of love to old Hollywood.
