Rewatch-a-thon to Star Wars Episode 9
Step 9 of 10
Watched on 3D Blu-Ray
A droid with important information for the resistance that gets lost on a desert planet and is found by a young person who grew up in simple circumstances, but who is called to higher powers. That's how it all started 42 years ago with A New Hope, the great-grandson choosing exactly the same scenario down to the comma.
What might surprise you a bit at first, later becomes a certainty: "The Force Awakens" picks up elements, situations and figures of the popular star saga in a form that is a bit bold even for a Hollywood sequel, in some places one wonders whether Episode VII is a sequel or a remake.
That's a pity, of course, and a bit disappointing for all those who have waited over 30 years to see how the distant galaxy will continue. Just like before: The names have been exchanged, otherwise hardly anything has. The feeling of treading on the spot is also strengthened by the fact that "The Force Awakens" is almost completely silent about the events after "Return of the Jedi", only incidentally reports about the intermediate years.
After all, the movie is aware of its exuberant fan service, which makes it sometimes with a wink - in general Episode VII is a surprisingly humorous movie. But you might ask yourself what the return of the screen heroes would have looked like if George Lucas' ideas had been taken up. As questionable as his prequels may have been, they worked independently and without the constant references to the original trilogy.
J.J.Abrams, on the other hand, puts all his work in the nostalgia factor. If you grew up with the old parts yourself, you'll have more fun here. Although the epic space battles are missing, Episode 7 is already full of action, but it is always entertaining, offers a number of interesting characters - old and new - and also says goodbye to the smooth polished look of the prequels. Here spaceships can look like actually used machines again and not only like computers, also the designs of the aliens are much more successful again.
In the end the movie is like meeting old friends you haven't seen for a long time. It's not a reunion like you always imagined it to be. The little flaws are too obvious for that, the others aren't quite as perfect as you remember them. And yet tears always shoot into your eyes and you only realize how much you missed them, how much they have become a part of you. The fact that the performance of the heroes of our childhood are a bit small is of course sad, at least Harrison Ford, in his role as the most popular scoundrel of the galaxy, can make you forget that actually three decades have passed since his last adventure.
