Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Rewatch-a-thon to Star Wars Episode 9
Step 2 of 10

Watched on Blu-Ray

Out of the obvious desire to distinguish himself from his "old" trilogy, George Lucas tried to create something "different" with an aseptic CGI clone and creature look. While the first part served the sweet candy needs of a childish target group, the second part is probably aimed at teenagers, seems (much) darker and more threatening and is supposed to be the emotional foundation for the following, dramatic third act.

The focus is on puberty, the striving for autonomy, the demarcation from the father figure, the discovery of sexuality, growing up, which is embodied by a bitchy and soggy hot spur, which annoys know-it better and stands in complete contrast to the child Anakin in Episode 1. There is no consequence to be recognized, it seems rather forced (no pun intended). Consequence is at best the inability to carefully tell a story without lengths.

"Star Wars: Episode 2-Attack of the Clones" bobbers extremely unmotivatedly, which is clearly shown in the kitschy and melodramatic love story. With revelations of feelings from the poetry album and pictures from the screensaver, the film occasionally sinks into unrestrained and stiff kitsch and slows itself down. Well, Master Lucas has never been good at writing precise or credible dialogues and telling them dynamically, but he was rarely as bad and involuntarily funny as here. So I often had to smile at the memory Leia hair dress and drink my way through the esoteric-narrow brew.

Natalie Portman is very attractive in her underchallenge, while Hayden Christensen arouses universal pity in his overchallenge.

I can let myself be fascinated by the fantastic architectural worlds and costumes, but that's not enough for a good film, not even for an average one. Even Christopher Lee, an absurdly agile Yoda, Joel Edgerton or Rose Byrne's tears in a tiny role don't save anything. It's my personal lowlight of the saga.
