Rewatch-a-thon to Star Wars Episode 9
Step 4 of 10
Watched on 3D Blu-Ray
Definitely not a bad movie. Bombed at the box office, unbelievable actually with all things that start with "Star" and end with "Wars", this second spin-off of the star saga can convince in some points.
The effects are great and "Solo" even offers some really fat action scenes like the fight on the train. The side characters are quite nice, the female droid (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) provides a lot of wind, which stands up for her own species and constantly demands equal rights. Such topics are of course exciting, but are mostly only used for oneliner and laser duels and never deepened.
This is also the biggest problem of "Solo". It all feels so unbelievable no matter, the typical Stars Wars feeling is there, but the story is meaningless and you can't find really iconic moments. Even though I was happy to see Woody Harrelson stalking and shooting around in the Star Wars universe and I would have liked to experience many more adventures with Chewie myself, there are many things that just stand or fall with the main actor Alden Ehrenreich, who is a good visual counterpart to Harrison Ford, but who actually spends the whole movie trying to imitate his iconic grin somehow. It's probably not for nothing that director Ron Howard, who had to pull the falcon out of the mud after Chris Miller and Phil Lord were dismissed, often showed him from behind or supposedly cut him out simply enough. It's a bit surprising that out of 3000 applicants for the leading role he was chosen.
The romance with Emilia Clarke, who is sympathetic, but very unfortunate because of her questionable choice of roles, is very boring and suffers from a lack of chemistry between the two.
Below are the 2 most important reasons why you should see the movie (at some point):
- Donald Glover as Lando doesn't stand out in the card game, but all of them acting-wise - and that superior. Everything he tries, no matter if music (Childish Gambino), series (Atlanta) or film seems to work.
- A sexy shower scene with Han and Chewbacca
Various Star Wars spin-offs were put on ice after this economic disappointment. I am not really sad about that. I don't have to have demystified all the beloved characters, even if you can spend your time worse than with "Solo".
