Ratatouille

Ratatouille

Watched on Blu-Ray

Rémy is a born gourmet and discovers his highly developed sense of taste in a farmhouse. The only problem is that Rémy is a rat, steals ingredients from an old granny and is looked askance at by his peers because of his talent. When he is separated from his clan one day, he finds himself in the culinary capital of Europe, Paris, and ends up in the restaurant of his deceased role model, Gusteau's. There, the young good-for-nothing is being prepared. There, the young good-for-nothing Linguini has just been hired as a cleaner in the kitchen. By chance, Rémy is able to manipulate one of the dishes, which are now only of mediocre quality. The guests, however, are so enthusiastic about the change that they quickly ask for seconds and mistake Linguini for the cook. He can't cook at all, though, so he teams up with the gourmet rat to attract the attention of even the harshest restaurant critics in the country.

After the minimalist superhero epic, Pixar returned to realism, and apart from the humans, the shots look pretty damn lifelike. While the look in "The Incredibles" feels like the Jetsons cartoons with a modern twist, giving it a bit of a James Bond or the themed superhero movie flair, "Ratatouille" has been created with a more painterly quality and is not afraid to exploit the possibilities of CGI. Detailed water, enchanting river frontages and accurate lighting effects abound in the film and reflect the love that has been put into each of the scenes. Your mouth literally waters as you savour the attention to detail and the penchant for realism at every second. Only the human characters have a more comic-strip feel to them, as they did in the predecessor, and they like to be overdrawn to suit their character. Nevertheless, the picture is coherent and bursting with ideas and colourfulness. The admittedly idealised image of the French capital could not have been captured better, and the research on appropriate meals also more than pays off visually.

Pixar had already been able to prove in the past that their stories do not drip with kitsch or lay it on too thick. With "Ratatouille" they even went one step further and spiced up the visual realism with a dense story. The mixture of humour, drama and suspense is convincing in every minute and captivates the viewer. The clear characterisation is striking, driving the story forward and providing the respective moral counterpart for the protagonists. The humour is written in a harmlessly ingenious way, which has always been a particular strength of Pixar. The terrific dubbing should also be mentioned here, which is dubbed in by well-known faces such as Patton Oswalt, Sir Ian Holm, Brian Dennehy or Peter O'Toole.

You also quickly notice how in-depth the film team has been with the research for the film. The menus are the stars and have been copied very well visually. Artistically as well as culinary, "Ratatouille" is a feast for the eyes, and away from the script chaos, you just can't get enough of the visuals. The drama elements are grippingly and poignantly inserted at all times, and so one quickly grasps Rémy's dilemma of whether to self-actualise or prioritise family duties.
