I had the movie on my watch list for ages and now I've finally caught up with it.
The premise is reminiscent of 70's films like The Omen. However, not even an attempt is made here to mystify the events. It is clear: the orphan Esther is a little bitch and sets out a devilish plan.
This manipulative brat, played by Isabelle Fuhrman, is really fun. How versatile this young girl was at that time is remarkable. It is a shame that she did not do anything worth mentioning after this movie.
Vera Farmiga's acting performance is again pure magic. The little deaf daughter is also great. Unfortunately, her deafness isn' t such a big plot point.
Unfortunately, the jump scares were too omnipresent. I would not have needed them. There are enough scenes that are really exciting without putting you on a fright. The movie is more thriller than horror anyway.
The twist at the end was nice, but also very far-fetched. This Lolita scene was really disturbed and fucked up.
Because of it's successful art style, the fantastic actors and some really fucked up scenes as the one mentioned above I would like to say that in the otherwise very mixed filmography of Jaume Collet-Serra this film is my favourite.
