"I want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be."
"What if this is the best version?"
It is difficult to stand out from the multitude of coming of age films. "Lady Bird" succeeds in doing so mainly because of the excellently written dialogues and the devoted playing of Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf.
Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson rebels against everyone and everything and does not want to be bent. With her lifestyle and her views she always clashes with her mother. A real love-hate relationship. Her mother only wants her best, but she keeps restricting Lady Bird and grants her little freedom or does not believe that her daughter can achieve her goals. A protective wall against disappointment quickly becomes a prison for your own personal development.
Soairse Ronan fits perfectly into the role of the rebellious young woman, who often has only cynicism and lack of understanding for her environment. She grounds her character, keeps it with the viewer despite the almost overdone absurdities that happen to her. She develops before our eyes by recognizing herself and trusting herself more and more. Many everyday situations are dealt with almost casually and almost everyone will find themselves somewhere in the reactions.
"Lady Bird" is a charming, chaotic, loving and sometimes heartbreaking search for meaning. And it calms us down by telling us that another place still remains the same world. And only we can invent and find our way in it. You have to work hard to love yourself. For a lifetime.
