There is probably no other First Lady who has been so thoroughly screened, analysed and exploited for pop culture as Jacqueline Kennedy. Only one week after the murder of her husband, she sits down at the summer residence of the Kennedy family with the reporter Theodore H. White from Life Magazine. The film "Jackie" looks back semifictionally on this week.
"Jackie" is not a biopic, not even a portrait of a lady in grief, but instead an inventory of a person in an extreme situation; told very brittlely and played very brittlely by Portman in another outstanding performance - neither she nor the film are concerned about the viewer's sympathies. Jackie herself sometimes seems insecure and naive, sometimes clever and refined, sometimes strong and calm, sometimes neurotic and depressive. Portman appropriated Jackie's accent, posture and facial expression exactly. So Jackie appears as a majesty on call, who can't be alone anywhere in this gigantic power apparatus. Which is great.
In wordless lonely scenes in long corridors, threatening close-ups, quiet conspiracy whispering, moving memories of banal happier times, the film shuffles from moment to moment to present us the assassination attempt on JFK, which is shown in a much more gruesome way than I expected.
Formally it's a feast for the senses; you imagine yourself in the nightmare of another person, additionally irritated by Mica Levi's great, very present score. A deeply satisfying film experience.
